What Students Need to Know

Beginning July 8 through August we will be upgrading UNB computer labs in Fredericton, Saint John, Moncton (Nursing) and Bathurst (Nursing).

Each lab will need to be closed for a period of 2 - 3 days to upgrade the operating system. See the lab upgrade schedule for details on when labs will be upgraded. Signs will also be posted in the labs to let you know what is happening.

Wondering what is going to be changing for you?

Changes with major impact:

  • H:\ Drive: Beginning July 8 if you are in lab that has not yet been upgraded, access to your H:\ drive will be limited to read only; this mean you can only view your files but not save anything new. To save new files to your H:\ drive you will need to use myFiles accessed within your myUNB Portal. As a lab is upgraded, you can access your H:\ as usual from within that lab.
  • NetStorage: Beginning July 8 you will need to access your H:\ drive using myFiles located within your myUNB Portal. myFiles allows you to access your files and folders from off-campus.
  • Web Browser: Only Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) will be installed (Firefox will be available for download – see Software Downloads). The web browser will also be set to InPrivate browsing as the default to help to ensure you are properly logged out of secure IT services as lab computers are public.
  • Software Downloads: You will no longer be able to install non-UNB approved software. Only software offered through the UNB Software Center (accessed through the icon on the lab computer desktop) can be installed on lab machines.
  • More Applications: The More Applications icon located on lab computer desktops will be removed. Software will be available in the UNB Software Center.

Other changes:

  • Operating System: Upgrading from Windows XP (32-bit) to Windows 7 (64-bit)
  • Microsoft Office: Upgrading from Office 2010 to Office 2013
  • Printing from Personal Devices: If you have printed from your personal device to a lab printer please see updated printing instructions (coming soon) and update your device prior to August 20.
  • Login Screen: As an added security level, before you log in you will first have to hit Ctrl + Alt + Del. The new login screen will appear and you can log in as usual.
  • Forgot Password: If you forget your password you will need to visit go.unb.ca/forgotpassword from a personal device or go to a kiosk located in the UNB Library.
  • Activate IT Services: If you need to activate your IT account you will need to visit go.unb.ca/activate from a personal device or go to a kiosk located in the UNB Library.
