What Faculty/Staff Need to Know
ITS is upgrading UNB’s student lab environment (Windows only) beginning July 8 through August. These upgrades may impact the lab component of a course; please review the upcoming changes outlined below.
A lab upgrade schedule is being finalized to visit each lab located in Fredericton, Saint John, Bathurst and Moncton and will be communicated once completed. Each lab will be unavailable for approximately 2 to 3 days to complete the upgrade. ITS is currently in discussion with Level 1s and lab managers to identify when labs cannot be closed during July and August to ensure we schedule around these dates.
What's changing?
- Operating System: Upgraded from Windows XP (32-bit) to Windows 7 (64-bit)
- Microsoft Office: Upgraded from Office 2010 to Office 2013
- Web Browser: Only Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) will be installed (Firefox will be available for download – see Software Downloads)
- Software Downloads: Students will no longer be able to install non-UNB approved software. Only software offered through the UNB Software Center can be installed on lab machines. If you ask your students to install software for your course you must contact your Level 1 or ITS to request it be added to the UNB Software Center a minimum of 3 weeks prior to start of your class.
- More Applications (NAL): The More Applications icon located on lab computer desktops will be removed. All software offered through this icon will NOT be automatically moved to the UNB Software Center. ITS is working with Level 1s and Lab Managers to identify required lab software; to assist us with this please contact your Level 1 or lab manager if you require software for your course as soon as possible as only identified software will be automatically moved to the UNB Software Center.
- YourLoginID-stdnt: If you have a special login ID to log in lab computers (loginID-stdnt) these will not be required and will no longer work once the lab has been upgraded. Once the lab has been upgraded you can use your usual UNB Login ID and password to log in. If you have saved any data on your H:\ drive using this special login ID you will be responsible to move these files; once the lab upgrade is complete these files will be inaccessible.
If you require special software for your course, please inform your Level 1, Lab Manager or the ITS Help Desk as soon as possible.
