Passports and Visas

When you arrive, you will be in possession of a valid passport and student authorization. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to see that your passport and student authorization remain valid during your stay in Canada. Application forms from Immigration Canada are available from the International Student Advisor/CIDA Coordinator's Office and the Canada Immigration Centre.

The following information is provided by the Canadian Immigration Centre:

You are required to fill out the application in any the following:

  1. Your authorized period of time in Canada is going to expire shortly;
  2. You plan to change your course of study or institution;
  3. You want to accept employment off campus;
  4. You are going to terminate your studies before your course is finished and your departure date is not immediate;
  5. If any area concerning your stay in Canada is not entirely clear please contact the Canada Immigration Office in Fredericton.

With reference to Item 1 above, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to ensure that your authorized period of time does not expire. You should fill out the Immigration Application Form AT LEAST ONE WEEK before the expiry date on your present student authorization.

When you apply for an extension, you must have a valid passport and proof that you have the financial means to support yourself.

You are required to present a letter from the Registrar's Office indicating your eligibility to continue your studies, and any other documents that may have been requested by the Canada Immigration Centre or the University.

CIDA and CBIE students will need a letter from the International Student Advisor\CIDA Coordinator's Office for student authorization.

Proof of financial support could include a scholarship contract, a letter from your parents or a bank, or a graduate assistantship contract. An up-to-date bank book should also be presented.

If you wish to have relatives from home visit you while you are in Canada, you should contact the Immigration Office concerning additional funds and other requirements.

United States Visitor's Visa

Registration forms to obtain a visitor's visa to the United States are available in Fredericton at the International Student Advisor/CIDA Coordinator's Office, Room 18, Alumni Memorial Building. In Saint John at the Office of the International Student Advisor's Office, Room 1-A, Annex A.

The form will tell you exactly what information is necessary to obtain a visa. Students wishing to visit the United States, or enter at any point for intransit travel connections, will need a U.S. visa.

Please note: Your passport must be valid for at least six months longer than your intended period of stay in the U.S. The U.S. visitor's visa can take up to six weeks to obtain, so please plan with this in mind.
