Your Host Family

A Host Family Association exists in Fredericton and in Saint John for the purpose of "hosting" international students during their stay in Canada. This church-run association pairs students with volunteer Canadian families who will meet the student and include him or her in their family activities throughout the year. There is no religious commitment. Many international students have found this an excellent way to meet people and feel at home in the community. If you are interested in having a host family in Fredericton or in Saint John, please leave your name with the International Student Advisor/CIDA Coordinator's Office. If a host family is available at that time, you will be placed with one.

English Language Program

The University of New Brunswick English Language Program in Fredericton and the Modern Language Centre in Saint John offers courses to assist non-anglophones to speak and function in an English milieu.

Several formats are available:

I. Intensive Total Immersion

a) September to April, three-week, seven-week, small group modules.
b) May to August, six-week, large group summer sessions.

All students must sign a pledge to use only English for the entire period of enrolment. Literally living in English, students find themselves immersed in the target language/culture in class, after class and on weekends.

II. Daily classes in one-week units; thirty hours, fifteen hours or ten hours per week.

III. Night classes on a university term basis; one three-hour block per week.

IV. Afternoon classes on a six-week or twelve-week basis; one three-hour block per week.

In formats II, III and IV, students are asked to function only in English during their classes and programme activities.
