Tweeting, Texting, Teens & Chat: The Internet and Sex in the Lives of Youth
April 6, 2011, 7:00 pm, Fredericton High School, Tom Morrison Theatre
Our lives have become inundated with Internet-based technologies, especially as a means of communication. As a result, the sexual lives of many young people are transformed in ways we never imagined. Parents are concerned, but should they be? This talk will examine the impact of Internet-based technologies on the sexuality and relationships of young people, including research on access to sexual information and images, cyber-bullying, harassment, and communication and deception in close relationships.
Lucia O’Sullivan is a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Adolescents’ Sexual Health Behaviours and a Professor in Psychology at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. Dr. O’Sullivan researches the sexual decision-making, as well as communication and coercion in heterosexual interactions of young adults and adolescents. While much of her research is carried out in Eastern Canada, she also works collaboratively on many international studies.
