Status of bargaining with PSAC/UGSW (Graduate Student Workers)

The University and the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) have been engaged in bargaining for a renewal of the collective agreement covering UNB graduate students who are in the Union of Graduate Student Workers bargaining unit working as Graduate Teaching Assistants or Research Assistants.

The initial agreement for this group covered the period 2008 – 2013. Although the collective agreement has now expired, it remains in effect while the parties are engaged in bargaining a renewal.

November 24, 2016

PSAC and the UNB Board of Governors have each voted in favour of ratifying the new four-year collective agreement.  Full news release is available here.

August 25, 2016

The University of New Brunswick and the Public Service Alliance of Canada / Union of Graduate Student Workers are pleased to announce that they have reached common ground on a tentative set of proposals for a new Collective Agreement.  Full news release is available here.

March 2, 2016

The University has been notified that the Minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour has appointed a mediator to assist the parties in reaching an agreement. The mediator has scheduled the initial meeting for Friday, March 11, 2016. 

UPDATE

As noted in an update to the FAQthe PSAC/UGSW members will be soon be holding a final offer / strike vote on February 29 and March 1. No matter the outcome of the vote, the University is not planning to lock out.

February 24, 2016 

The official notice has been received by UNB from the Minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour stating there would be no conciliation board appointed, along with attachments regarding the process for strike votes.  A copy is available at this LINK.

February 19, 2016 

The Parties were advised by email that the Minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour would not be appointing a conciliation board. February 11, 2016 

The University was notified that the Conciliation Officer appointed by the Province to assist PSAC/UGSW and the University reach a final agreement had declared the process as having reached an impasse. This is in spite of the fact that over 90 changes to the collective agreement have been agreed upon and in spite of the fact that the University offered a revised package of proposals on all outstanding matters that it believed to be fair and reasonable for all concerned.
