Benefits Entitlement

Benefits – What benefits are available and how benefit entitlement is determined.

The length of the intended employment relationship and the number of guaranteed hours per week determine if and what benefits the employee is entitled to. Benefits can include insured benefits and also such things as vacation and other leave entitlement.

Insured Benefits

No Benefit Entitlement

Staff hired for less than 12 months are not entitled to benefits and staff hired for more than 12 months but who are not guaranteed at least 13 hours work per week are not entitled to benefits.

Part-time Benefit Entitlement

Employees hired for 12 months or more and who work part-time for 13 hours or more per week and less than 29 hours a week only.

Full-Time Benefit Entitlement

Employees hired for 12 months or more and who work full-time, which is 29 hours a week or more are entitled to full benefits.

Full-time Benefit Entitlement Faculty

Faculty hired to work full-time for eight month or more are entitled to full benefits with two exceptions.

*If they are in a term of less than 12 months they only are eligible to join the Academic Pension Plan when they meet the conditions fo earnings being not less than 35% of the CPP Year's Maximum Pensionable Contributions for each of the preceding two years.

**If they are in a term of less than two years they only are eligible for parental or maternity leave top-up when in the second or subsequent years of a consecutive term appointment and to to the end of their term appointment.

**After six (6) months of employment and following successful completion of the initial probationary period, a continuing employee whose position is funded from the University operating budget (Fund 11 and 12 only).

Vacation and Other

Employees eligible for insured Benefits

Employees who qualify for insured benefits are normally also entitled to vacation day credits, statutory holidays, sick leave and other paid and unpaid leaves leaves.

The entitlement for these leaves can vary dependent on the employment relationship and also on which employment group the employee is a member of. You should be aware of the different employment groups and the policies specific to that group.

Employees not eligible for Insured Benefits

Employees who are not eligible for insured benefits receive vacation pay on their regular bi-weekly payments.
