Investment Performance

In the Pension Plan's Statement of Investment Policies and Goals, there are two investment objectives assigned to the Plan's investment managers. The first investment objective is to obtain a real rate of return on the Plan's assets of 3.75% after inflation and investment-related expenses. This is the rate of return assumed by the Plan's actuary in the actuarial valuation of the Plan for the purpose of determining the appropriate level of contributions from members and the University. The following table displays historical rates of return since inception.

The second investment objective is that the Plan should outperform a benchmark made up of index returns by 1.0%. Over the thirteen year period that the Plan has operated, the fund has earned 8.8% on an annualized basis, compared to a benchmark of 9.6%.

Members are required to contribute at rates specified in the plan through payroll deductions. The University is required to contribute an amount equal to the total of the members' contributions. Since January 1, 1993, the contribution rates have been as follows:
