Function
This position provides technical support, laboratory preparation and instruction for undergraduate physiology and anatomy courses for students in Biology, Kinesiology and Nursing, as well as for the Marine Block semester. It also provides back-up to the Aquatic Facilities Manager in caring for animals in the aquatic facility in the Department of Biology. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining safety standards and procedures for both undergraduate teaching labs and the radiation suites that are used primarily by researchers in Biology and Geology. This position provides support to UNB’s animal care program through the collection of applications for animal use, maintaining contact with researchers and instructors who routinely use animals, creating and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the use of live animals and coordinating the training of animal users.
Representative Responsibilities
Physiology/Anatomy/Marine Block Technician:
· Laboratory preparation, setup and clean up.
· Oversight of general laboratory activities during each lab period to ensure that safety guidelines are provided and enforced.
· Maintenance of databases and lists of the number and types of live materials, chemicals, equipment and software.
· Organization of transportation and accommodations for field trips.
· Ensuring for proper working condition of laboratory equipment.
· Research and development of new techniques or modifications of existing lab protocols to determine their appropriateness for students and to create an effective learning experience.
· Conducting informative guides through the aquatic facility.
Intermediate Radiation Safety Officer:
• Interface between UNB and Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission inspectors.
• Oversight of the use of radioactive material, including record keeping, contamination monitoring, storage and disposal.
• Compliance determination and reporting, including management of dosimetry program and inventory records and the completion of annual reports.
• Maintenance of safety equipment and documentation, and safety consultant to users of radioactive material.
• Oversight of emergency procedures and emergency response plans, with authority to terminate unsafe activities.
Animal Care Coordinator:
· Organization of Animal Care Committee meetings and site visits.
· Contribution to the training of animal users.
· Management of submitted animal use protocols, including amendments and renewals.
· Production and distribution of ACC minutes and site visit reports, as well as ensuring appropriate follow up.
· Documentation and filing of all exchanges between the ACC, animal users, and the senior administration.
· Contribution to the revision and development of the ACC’s terms of reference, animal protocol form and SOPs.
· Participation in preparing annual animal use data for completion of the CCAC’s Animal Use Data Form.
Requirements
• MSc, with 1-2 years related experience.
• Aquatic facilities and aquatic animal care experience and training.
• Radiation safety training.
• First Aid and WHMIS training.
