Function

Directed by the Head the of Science & Forestry Library, the incumbent plays a key role in the operation of the Science & Forestry Library, with specific responsibilities for part-time and student staff, research support, technical aspects of the S & F Library’s operation, and physical maintenance of the S&F Library. Hours of work will include evenings and weekends. The incumbent may be required to provide service at any of the three UNBF Libraries.
Representative Responsibilities
   Manage staff and operations in the Science & Forestry Library in the absence of librarians.
   Actively involved in the recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation of new staff and student assistants.
   Maintain S&F Library website.
   Prepare schedules and reports and other documents; maintains records and statistics. 
   Participate in meetings on behalf of the S&F Library.
   Assist with Library operations; make recommendations regarding procedures.
   Assist the Librarian in promoting the work of the Library and the Faculties of Science and Forestry through the use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter.
   Work closely with library systems to resolve computer-related issues in the Library.
   Responsible for scheduling of hours for student assistants and part-time employees. Participate in reporting hours through the TimeOnline or other designated systems.
   Resolve complex problems related to circulation, equipment, and cataloguing records.
   Prepare promotional material for the Library.
   Support and deliver information literacy instruction and library orientation for credit classes, groups, and individuals.
   Prepare and edit entries for local online bibliographies. Adds local material to online bibliographic holdings.
   Participate in document delivery process by verifying Science Library holdings. Acts as a backup for scanning of outgoing document delivery requests.
   Respond to “Ask Librarian” electronic correspondence received through the Library’s web page or refers as appropriate.
Requirements
   University degree in the Sciences or related discipline, supplemented by 5 years’ progressive responsible experience preferably in a public service area of an academic library or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
   Ability to work effectively in an online environment including demonstrated expertise with electronic library resources and services, and desktop applications. Knowledge of the scientific literature and research process an asset. Additional skills such as GPS training or scientific publishing experience an asset.
   Demonstrated hardware and software troubleshooting experience.
   Supervisory experience essential, including experience recruiting, hiring, and training.
   Demonstrated leadership, decision making, and problem solving skills.
   Demonstrated ability to work independently, as a member of a team, and pay close attention to detail.
   Demonstrated excellent public service orientation. Must have the interpersonal skills to deal with faculty, staff, students, colleagues, and other library patrons with tact, discretion, and courtesy.
   Ability to work regular evening and weekend shifts. The ability to work evenings and weekends on a flexible basis as required to supervise and train Research Help Desk Assistants.
   Physical stamina for lifting, standing, and bending.
