Function

The Science, Applied Science & Engineering (SASE) Technician will report directly to the Chair of Engineering and will work with all faculty members in engineering to support them and their students in teaching and research labs and similarly in the field. The incumbent will also support the research technical work in SASE.
Representative Responsibilities
   Support the work of faculty and student in the labs and in the field to ensure equipment is used properly and safely.
   Maintain a chemical inventory and work with faculty to ensure lab safety and compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Standards & Regulations.
   Provide technical support to construct and maintain lab apparatus, ensure equipment is functioning properly and that materials are available and ready for use.
   Maintain a broad range of mechanical and electrical equipment, troubleshooting when necessary, and keep detailed records of maintenance/calibration/repairs and training.
   Liaise with suppliers to repair, calibrate and maintain speciality equipment, and to purchase new equipment and materials for the labs.
   Ensure SASE faculty members have the lab facilities needed to fulfil their teaching and research responsibilities by designing, constructing and installing equipment and instruments as needed.
   Perform basic maintenance and repairs to a variety of scientific instruments and technical facilities, which may include monitoring and maintenance to salt, de-mineralized, and de-chlorinated water systems and associated water-related duties.
   Maintenance and support of utilities, including propane, low pressure air and cooling systems specific to laboratories and systems within laboratory boundaries.
   Provide on-going assistance and support to faculty members with the design, repair and computer interfacing equipment relevant to their research and teaching requirements.
   Train and assist faculty, staff and students with the use of chemicals and equipment so they can handle it safely.
Requirements
   High school and community college or equivalent. 2 years practical and related experience.
   Accredited technician level program for Certified Technician (CTech or CET).
   Must be a member or eligible for membership in NBSCETT.
   Knowledge of the safe use of chemicals and products and WHMIS training. First aid and CPR certification.
   A background in electrical and mechanical engineering technology, electronics and instrumentation technology.
   Combination of professional training and work experience.
   Organized with good time management skills.
   Ability to work closely and professionally with staff, faculty, and students.
