Function

This position is responsible for the effective operation of the campus’s data network including the evaluation, design, configuration, installation and maintenance of all network components of the UNB Saint John campus network; including Beaverbrook House, and the network wiring closets across campus. This position maintains contacts with system integrators, consultants, vendors and manufacturer to keep up-to-date on technological changes. The incumbent provides advice and makes recommendations to management on network communications equipment, software and services in support of the mission of the university.
Representative Responsibilities
·    Experiment, design, test, deploy, monitor and maintain all wired and wireless network hardware on campus and at remote sites.
·    Create and maintain documentation of network infrastructure, including physical and logical diagrams.
·    Maintain an inventory of network hardware, equipment and numbering all campus network components.
·    Administer network domain names, addresses and other identifiers using DNS/DHCP database.
·    Maintain an active relationship with the operational network staff of the NB/PEI Educational Computer Network and the provincial NBORAN to ensure near continuous access to the commercial internet and national and international research networks.
·    Monitor and maintain the security of both wired and wireless networks. This includes, but is not limited to, the campus boarder firewall, VPN for secure remote access and the secure networks for the video surveillance and access control systems.
·    Troubleshoot network issues both as they are identified ensuring prompt resolution to issues related to critical network services. Preemptively identify issues that may affect network stability and or security and takes steps to mitigate issues before they arrive.
·    Preform network maintenance and support functions and perform emergency support for critical services outside regular hours as required. Tracking issues and service request using Help Desk software.
·    Assist other departments with network related services and infrastructure; including but not limited to campus video conferencing and audio visual support.
·    Other duties as required.
Requirements
·    Undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science with an emphasis on network communication; or a 2 year diploma in a program related to network support or equivalent experience.
·    Three or more years of related experience.
·    High level of technical skills and experience is required.
·    Wireless technologies (Juniper); firewall technologies (Fortigate, Juniper); Windows, Linux server experience; VOIP (Cisco); H323, Polycom video-conferencing experience.
·    Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; strong problem-solving skills.
·    Ability to interact and communicate with a diverse group of clients; sensitivity to cultural difference and issues.
·    Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with different skill sets.
