Function

Reporting to the Manager, Research Funds, the Financial Analyst is responsible for various accounting, control and financial administration and reporting functions relating to research grants, contracts, agreements and control accounts on the Fredericton campus.
Representative Responsibilities
   Responsible for complex agreements, budgets, financial reporting, forecasting and modelling for research agreements.
   Liaise daily with researchers and other administrative personnel regarding research agreements.
   Act as the primary financial liaison between UNB and our various funding bodies and client organizations
   Exercise judgement in order to establish required accounts, to determine the appropriate classification, tax status and fund status of the accounts, and to establish appropriate eligibilities based on approved budgets.
   Monitor and analyse on a regular and timely basis the financial results of research accounts.
   Investigate and resolve transactions due to ineligibility or lack of funds.
   Pre-authorize all requests for salary payments against research accounts under a strict code of confidentiality.
   Review and approval of all transactions involving salary, revenue, non-salary and overhead to ensure required budget adjustments are recorded, the transactions are valid, proper coding is maintained and agreement guidelines are honoured. Withhold approval when necessary.
   Authority to freeze spending, close accounts, and return funds when necessary.
   Prepare and maintain project budgets to ensure that research accounts are accurate.
   Financial analysis, preparation of cash flow schedules, financial statements, reconciliations, forecasts and modelling, etc.
   Assist researchers and research groups in understanding how to use the financial administrative system. Provide training.
   Prepare invoices or financial claims to external agencies according to agreement guidelines.
   Monitor the status of Research Accounts Receivable on a regular basis. Investigate unpaid accounts.
   Prepare, review and analyse the financial results of Research Centres, Institutes, chairs and groups to determine if the results of operations are reasonable and viable in view of approved annual budgets. Provide forecasting and modelling to determine future feasibility of operations and to provide advice and recommendations for future actions when necessary.
   Provide statistical and financial analysis on research activity to senior management for decision making purposes.
   Assist with UNB’s annual audit by providing information regarding research related activity and balances at year-end.
   Provide input into all policies, guidelines and procedures at the university that have financial implications to the research community.
Requirements
·    Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or equivalent education and experience. 5 – 8 years of relevant experience.
·    Familiarity with project management or project accounting and financial statement preparation.
·    Familiarity with a university environment would be considered an asset.
·    Demonstrated analytical, forecasting, planning and organizational skills are required.
·    Excellent spreadsheet and computer skills.
·    Ability to perform as a team player is essential.
·    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
