The Senior Technician reports to the Chief Technician, who supervises the technical group within Chemical Engineering. The Senior Technician supports the following: five undergraduate labs with combined enrolment of over 400 students per year; equipment ordering/supply; technical support for research projects and contracts with annual fundraising of over $2 million. The Senior Technician routinely interacts with faculty and teaching assistants, and also directly assists our population of 70-80 graduate students with research projects including precision machining and fabrication work supporting a broad variety of laboratory and research projects.
Representative Responsibilities
·    Ensure operational readiness of equipment for undergraduate teaching laboratories; regular inspections, correct any malfunctions, order replacement material as required.
·    Annually (normally over summer months): perform routine maintenance and repair of older equipment; commission new equipment; install instrumentation hardware and software as required.
·    Training of instructors and teaching assistants: safe operation of equipment.
·    Maintain/audit undergraduate lab operations and safety knowledge.
·    Act as Technical Consultant to faculty and students regarding teaching and research labs.
·    Precision machining of parts and fabrication of prototype research assemblies.
·    Preparation of CAD drawings.
·    Welding and steel fabrication.
·    Organize and maintain a working stock of consumables: metal pipe/bar/plate, plastic stock, fittings, tools, etc.
·    Attend various safety program courses including WHMIS, First Aid & CPR, Safe Gas Handing Programs, and Lockout & Tagout Procedures.
·    Liaise with various groups and outside contractors.
·    High school graduation. Certification and registration as a qualified Journeyman Machinist that is recognized nationally in Canada.
·    At least five (5) years of relevant experience as machinist in a shop environment, with demonstrated ability in client interactions, teamwork order/invoice preparation, and equipment selection. Experience in precision machining.
·    Good working knowledge of various materials such as metals and their alloys, Teflon, and ceramics.
·    Ability to work closely with students and faculty is a must-have quality.
