Sandra Howland   2004 UNB Service Award Recipient

Since joining the University of New Brunswick in 1986, Sandra Howland has exemplified those characteristics for which this University stands including quality, leadership, expertise, outstanding performance, dedication and loyalty. With steadily increased responsibilities and expectations of her position over nearly 18 years, Ms. Howland's performance as senior public relations officer has surpassed expectations and raised the bar for public relations efforts in general and for her colleagues in particular.

Ms. Howland's in-depth knowledge of UNB, its history, faculties, programs and people combined with her commitment to enhancing the reputation of UNB has contributed significantly to this University being recognized for its own inherent value. Providing strategic support to senior administration and selected faculties and officers, Sandra's sensitive and mature treatment in handling day-to-day communications, issues and crises has given her an excellent reputation with the University community.

Since 1994, the enormous responsibility of managing all aspects of UNBF's graduation ceremonies has fallen under Ms. Howland's direction as Chair of UNB Fredericton's Encaenia and Convocation Organizing Committees. The smoothness and success of these high profile events year after year are a reflection of Ms. Howland's countless hours of dedication and quiet competence.

Aside from her many regular responsibilities, Ms. Howland's efforts and expertise have been sought in other areas including the President's Installation Organizing Committee in 1996 and 2002, and the Chancellor's Installation Organizing Committee in 2002. Her ongoing work with UNB's Making A Significant Difference program has proven invaluable.

One of Ms. Howland's colleagues writes: "Sandra has set a shining example for the rest of us to follow. We admire her work ethic, her professionalism and the quality of her written material. They are all of the highest calibre. She sets high standards for herself and for the University. UNB is a better place because of Sandra Howland."

Since joining UNB almost 18 years ago, Ms. Howland has truly made an impactful contribution to the University of New Brunswick and is most deserving of the honour of a UNB Service Award.
