David Wiezel   2009 Distinguished Service Award Recipient

Mr. David Wiezel is a graduate of the University of New Brunswick and attended both the Saint John and Fredericton campuses. He commenced his Human Resource Management career in 1976 as a Personnel Officer with the New Brunswick government’s Department of Treasury Board. Just over ten years later he joined the University of New Brunswick’s Personnel Services department (now Human Resources & Organizational Development) as Salary Administration Officer. In the years that followed several other areas of responsibility were added to his portfolio including staff labour relations and, most recently, training and development. Mr. Wiezel also served as Acting Director of the department for an extended period (January – September, 1999). At retirement in early 2008 he held the position of Human Resources Consultant (Employee Relations and Salary Administration).

The University of New Brunswick has long recognized that one of its keys to success, and something that distinguishes it from many other universities in Canada, has been its record of positive labour relations with unionized employees. A major reason for this has been the efforts of Mr. Wiezel in maintaining open and meaningful dialogue with employees and their representatives, not only during collective bargaining but, even more importantly, during the time between rounds of bargaining. David was always respected for his ability to achieve workable solutions that balanced the interests of employees with those of the organization and he was highly trusted for his discretion, reliability and judgment.

Mr. Wiezel modeled the very best traits that a senior HR professional should possess. He was a member of the Human Resource Association of New Brunswick, holds the Certified Human Resource Professional designation and in 2006 was a finalist for the Excellence in Human Resources honour at the Atlantic Canada Human Resources Associations Awards. He has demonstrated a strong commitment to lifelong learning through regular participation in conferences, course and workshops. He sought training and certification as an Insights facilitator and introduced it as an important tool in UNB’s organizational development program. He was frequently a workshop leader or guest lecturer in several Faculties and he was routinely cited as an outstanding presenter with excellent topic knowledge and a polished delivery style.

David has also been an active contributor to the community at large. He has served as Campaign Chair of the Central New Brunswick United Way, as Mayor of New Maryland, as a Nominee on provincial Conciliation Boards and he reached out to not-for-profit organizations to offer them access to development opportunities at the university.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions over the span of a career, Mr. David Wiezel is presented with a Distinguished Service Award.
