Welcome to the web site for the Connell Memorial Herbarium (acronym UNB). Thanks to a grant from the New Brunswick Wildlife Trust Fund, support from the University of New Brunswick Department of Biology, and proceeds from the sale of the "Flora of New Brunswick" we are in the process of putting together a database of the label information for all the N.B. specimens housed in the herbarium. To date, approximately 60 % of the N.B. specimens have been databased.
Established in 1838, the Connell Memorial Herbarium is the oldest institutional collection still extant in Canada (B. Boivin in Survey of Canadian Herbaria, Provancheria No. 10, 1980). It now houses over 57600 specimens, (approximately 90% from New Brunswick). This is the largest collection of vascular plants in the Province and the second largest in Atlantic Canada. There are also an algal collection of more than 2000 specimens including many type specimens and a small mycological collection.
