Honorary Degree Recipient
Mathieu Duguay, New Brunswick musician and educator, will receive an honorary doctor letters of degree during UNB's 58th Convocation in Fredericton.
Mathieu Duguay is an internationally-recognized organist and harpsichordist who has contributed more than 40 years to music and music education in New Brunswick. Mr. Duguay taught in Montreal for many years before returning to New Brunswick in 1976 to devote himself to musical and educational pursuits. He gave private lessons and was organist and choir master in the parish
of Notre-Dame-des Flots. He was one of the co-founders of the
Conservatoire de musique de l'Acadie and one of the main advocates of
the Chaîne culturelle de Radio-Canada in northeastern New Brunswick.
Born in Lamèque, N.B., Mr. Duguay studied at the College de Bathurst and the New Brunswick Teachers' College. He furthered his musical education at l'École supérieure de musique Vincent d'lndy in Montreal, graduating with a bachelor's degree in piano, and then received his master's in early music from l'Université de Montréal. He began his professional career in Montreal and Toronto as an organist, harpsichordist, and chamber musician.
One of his crowning achievements is the establishment, in 1976, of the Lamèque International Baroque Music Festival, which has brought chamber music and recognition to Lamèque and New Brunswick. The excellent calibre of the concerts has undoubtedly made this festival the greatest celebration of baroque music in Canada.
In 1995, Mathieu Duguay was named to the Order of Canada and in 2003, he received the Order of New Brunswick.
