Research

UNB Geology graduates are successful in finding placements nationally and internationally in the public and private sector.UNB is a major centre for research in Atlantic Canada. More than 80 per cent of the research conducted at New Brunswick universities happens at UNB, with more than $51 million in annual research funding through grants and contracts

The University’s research capacity supports over 800 faculty and research staff, including 16 Canada Research Chairs.

Research centres

UNB has more than 60 research centres, institutes, including

  • the Canadian Research Institute for Social Policy, which conducts policy research aimed at improving the education and care of Canadian children and youth.
  • the Canadian Rivers Institute, the first institute of its kind in the world, focusing on rivers and the challenges of water resources conservation, protection, restoration, and sustainable use.
  • the Centre of Coastal Studies and Aquaculture conducts research in Canada, the Caribbean, the UK, the Mediterranean, South America, Australia and Antarctica. The Centre has its own research vessel, Mary-O, which is equipped for offshore work in the Bay of Fundy.
  • the Child Health Intervention and Longitudinal Development - Students interested in studying in this exciting area will find valuable information on this site. Helpful material is also available for parents, educators, researchers, media and policy influencers. The website provides information on our funded and future studies.
  • the Gregg Centre for the Study of War and Society, which is one of the few research institutes in Canada and the U.S. studying the role of climate change in current and future conflicts.
  • the Information Security Center of Excellence, is envisaged as a broad based unit having both an education and research mandate. The ultimate goal to build on this base and contribute to the establishment of a UNB-based Canada-wide Institute for Advanced Studies of Privacy, Security and Trust (PST)
  • the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, a world-renowned research facility in biomedical engineering and one of the oldest solely dedicated to this field.
  • the MRI Research Centre, one of the largest and best-known material science magnetic resonance imaging labs in the world.
  • the Planetary Space Science Centre, which is the only NASA-supported planetary imaging facility in Canada.

  • Google Earth uses technology developed by UNB geodesy and geomatics engineering researchers.
  • The research of UNB Saint John professor Karen Kidd was featured as one of the top 100 science stories of 2007 by Discover Magazine.
  • UNB Fredericton researcher Kevin Englehart is the recipient of a 2007 Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award.

Research services

The Office of Research Services (ORS) helps connect researchers with funding agencies, industry, business and government to obtain support that will enhance research activity at UNB. ORS supports faculty members and researchers on both campuses who are seeking research funding by providing support services for grant and contract preparation and submission.
