Academic Advising for Second Year

Choosing a Major

Your first year has likely gone by faster than you expected and you are now faced with the task of choosing a major.  Whether you find yourself questioning the route you planned at the start of the year or still have no idea which way to go, we will provide you with resources to assist with your major consideration.

Departmental Open Houses

Pre-Registration in courses for the next year normally start right after March Break.  Before then we provide you with opportunities to research your options, decide on a BSc program, and get academic advising and course planning from the appropriate Department Undergraduate Advisor.

Each Department will have an information session to highlight their programs and provide academic advising in late January and early February before the March break.  We encourage you to take advantage of this and attend the open house for your department/program of choice. If you are considering more than one option we recommend you attend both department open houses in order to make an educated decision and get the program selection and academic advising completed in a timely fashion. The departmental open houses will be announced on our website, digital boards (outside the science library), and in your UNB email notices and reminders.

If you attend these sessions and still feel confused, apprehensive, and are in need of a listening ear as you weigh your options the Assistant Deans are here to help. Just contact Angela Regier at the Student Services Office at sci.connect@unb.ca to schedule an appointment.

Course Registration

Second year means a whole new set of courses and a new academic advisor. Once you have made your major decision you will need to set up an appointment to meet with the Advisor for that major or indepartmental program. To schedule appointments for academic advising and major declaration we suggest you contact the Advisors directly by email. For students majoring in Biology you can schedule an appointment with Denise Clark by contacting the Biology Department by email or phone (506) 453-4583. Remember your Advisor is available throughout the year to assist you with your academic goals and program.
