UNB Geology: looking to the future
The UNB Geology Department provides significant teaching, research, and technical services in support of mineral exploration and economic growth within NB and Canada. This occurs through faculty and student research and through our technical services who provide minerals preparation and analyses (at cost-recovery) to the wider geoscience community.
UNB Geology is primarily a research department with the highest research ranking UNB awards (number 1 ranking). In order to contribute to maintaining UNB as a comprehensive university, we seek to expand our research and graduate activities. Professional interactions between our faculty with contacts across the country and internationally has lead to successful placement of graduates in the private and government sectors. These Geology alumni remain among the strongest supporters of UNB (as demonstrated over the last 30 months by the Quartermain donations).
The Department is in need of major refurbishing of teaching and research facilities. Teaching rooms and laboratory space have been below needs for some years. The need for smart classrooms equipped with media equipment and web hook-ups, is considered a future priority. At present our main teaching and laboratory rooms have not been converted to smart class rooms. This affects the delivery of several courses, however, some teaching and laboratory space problems may be solved through proposed renovations involved with construction of the Quartermain Centre.
The Department is planning a major fund-raising campaign to achieve funding needed for additional teaching staff and infrastructure support. Contact the Department Chair for information about the various ways of supporting UNB Geology.
