Adult Coleoptera

Head prolonged forward into a distinct snout; with one pair of eyes; without large hind coxal plates

 

Curculionidae

Legs with well-developed swimming hair fringes; fore tibia without curved projection or spur at tip; cutellum may be exposed; antennae not ending in a club

Dytiscidae

Antennae variable but never with a cuplike segment at the base of a club; body not especially streamlined; hind legs without swimming hairs

Elmidae

 

Larval Coleoptera

Body oval and flattened with dorsal plates covering head and legs

Psephenidae

Body tapered at ends, legs and tails long; abdomen has 8 segments; legs 5 segmented (claw excluded)

Dytiscidae

Abdomen with suture lines on segments 1 to 6 or 8, may be indistinct; mandibles not readily visible from above  Legs 4 segmented (claw excluded)

Elmidae
