**Field Course Summer 2010**
“ River Habitats and Hydraulics (BIOL 6183 / CE 6414)”

2010 Location: Queen’s University Biological Station 2010 Dates: August 14-21 Description: A full credit (3 credit hours) field course (Biol 6183 / Civil Eng 6414) to provide theoretical and practical understanding of the hydrology and ecology of natural river ecosystems; interdisciplinary focus of abiotic-biotic interactions via group and individual study; topics to be covered include fluvial geomorphology, open-channel hydraulics, environmental perturbations, habitat survey and sampling design, benthic invertebrate identification and ecology; fish identification, habitat requirements and ecology; nutrient/trophic dynamics; impact assessment and river habitat restoration. Emphasis will be on the conservation of river environments as unique, complex ecosystems by using a catchment (landscape) perspective. Instructors: Class size and level: 24 (maximum); Graduate-level credit course, open to professionals (industry and government) Prerequisites: 3rd/4th Year Ecology, or equivalent experience Program: a.m. classroom / lectures; p.m. fieldwork / labs Course fees: NOTE: The course fee covers the costs for running the course, and includes the room and board at the Biological Station for 8 nights. If participants are interested in receiving credit or audit status for completion of the course, please refer to the table below for additional university tuition fees.
