Biology 3173, a.k.a. the Marine Biology Field Course, is a comprehensive introduction to the ecology and biology of coastal marine organisms in the Passamaquoddy Bay region of the Bay of Fundy, NB. In this world famous setting, students gain invaluable experience from studying marine organisms in their local environments, observing first hand the biotic interactions among organisms, and the influence abiotic (and biotic) factors exert upon their distributions and adaptations. Practical methods for species collection and identification of marine invertebrates, seaweeds, fish, birds, plankton, lichens, and nearshore plants will be emphasized in order to enhance field projects involving ecological and oceanographic techniques employed in the study of marine ecosystems, habitat diversity, biodiversity, organism distributions, and adaptations.
