Interests
Simon has worked as a research scientist with the Gulf Fisheries Centre, DFO since 1990 and is presently posted to the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton NB as a Research Professor in the Department of Biology. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Rivers Institute and also holds adjunct status at the University of Prince Edward Island and l’Institut national de la recherche scientifique, INRS-Eau, Terre et Environonnement - Université de Québec. He has contributed to over a hundred journal articles and technical reports in the fields of estuarine ecology and ecotoxicology and since 1994 has contributed to the development of the Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) programs for Canadian pulp and paper mills and metal mines. Present research in Dr. Courtenay’s lab is focused on coastal impacts of human activities including agriculture, aquaculture, fishing, oil and gas development and dredging.

- Environmental implications of bivalve aquaculture in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence
-Environmental implications of offshore oil and gas exploitation: a) impacts of seismic surveys on snow crab; b) effects of oil, oil dispersants and orimulsion on early life development of marine Atlantic fish.
-CAMP (the Community Aquatic Monitoring Program): working with environmental non-governmental organizations to monitor the health of 30 sites around the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence through their communities of fish
-Nutrient impacts on estuarine ecology in Atlantic Canada
-Environmental impacts of commercial peat moss harvesting on coastal ecosystems
-Cellular accumulation of lipofuscin as a way to age snow crabs
-improved understanding of the ecology of a commercially important species at risk, the American eel: importance of estuaries and bays as rearing habitat, daily and seasonal burrowing behaviour, and importance of freshwater habitats for overwintering
