There are two options for the Biology-Chemistry program: the Major and the Honours.
The Major program has a 131 credit hour requirement and is completed in three or four years and requires the completion of the Core Requirements plus 21 ch of electives (in addition to 1st year electives).
The Honours program has a requirement of 149 credit hours,is normally completed in four years. In addition to the requirements for a Major listed above, the students must complete 18 ch chosen from an approved list of "options" (see course options). For the honours program, you can complete it with an "Honours by Course" or an "Honours by thesis". The "by course" option means that you take the additional 18 ch of Biology-Chemistry options as described above. For the "by thesis" option, you must have a cgpa of 3.0 for acceptance into the program, and make application to the Chair of the appropriate Department to take the thesis courses (BIOL 4090 or CHEM 4000) as part of the additional 15 ch of electives required by the Honours program.
Please be aware that if your CGPA falls below 3.0 then you will receive a BioChem major degree even though you completed the additional 18Ch. If you get a CGPA of 3.7 or greater, you will graduate with a “First-Class Honours”
Advising Notes:
Changes to the BioChem Program!
The requirement for advanced biology labs has changed: Now you must take any two of the following: BIOL 3206 (micro lab), 4056 (eukaryotic lab), 4533 (Bioinformatics), 3181 (Embryology), or 3521(Plant Physiology).
STAT 2264 is now a required course in the core (You will NOT get credit if you take STAT 2263)
CHEM 3421 is now required (rather than CHEM 3421 OR 3422). Chem 3422 is still part of the "option" list.
Addition to the options: We have added an organismal and evolution component to the options list. You can now get credit for ONE of the following three courses: B2083 (botany) or 2093 (Zoology) or 2143 (Evolution) to address any specific interest you may have. There have been other modifications to the options list, so check under the "course Options" tab for the approved courses. Check with your advisor if you have questions.
The following Checklists are to help you plan your courses and are not intended to replace advising by Drs Durnford or Deslongchamps. Have your program approved to avoid delays in graduation!
