Neill House

 Neill House

House History

Neill House was one of a complex of eight men's residences that were constructed on the UNB campus in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Neill House and it's twin, Neville House, were both financed through funds raised in the University Building Campaign. Neill House was named after the Neill family of Fredericton, in recognition of their "magnificent assistance" to the University over the years. The cornerstone was laid by J. Stewart Neill on May 16, 1961, and the house officially opened that fall, at the beginning of the academic year. After a lengthy correspondence, on February 15, 1962, Neill House was granted an official coat of arms.

It remained a men's residence until September, 1996, at which point, amid considerable controversy, it became co-ed.

House Charity

Our big charity event is Raise A Little Hell (RALH) and is one of the biggest charitable events on campus. Raise A Little Hell is a full day event that begins before the sun rises! We all get together in the study lounge and watch the sunrise. However the two big events for Raise A Little Hell begin in the afternoon. At suppertime we have a head and a pie a proctor auction in meal hall. Anyone who wants to shave their head has to raise a certain amount of money for the Canadian Cancer Society.  The pie a proctor auction consists of a lot of whip cream and chocolate sauce and some brave proctors who volunteered to auction themselves off to raise money for our charity. After the activities in meal hall we all head back to Neill House and we have our Raise A Little Hell Social. The day is long, but it is by far one of the best days of the year!
