Front line support in the community

In residence at UNB, we have a group of student leaders who are selected to provide support and a positive developmental living environment for students in residence. These students, called Proctors,  provide frontline support to residents and serve in one of two roles: Hall Proctor and Educational Proctors.

Residence Leader Manual - This manual, intended for Proctors at UNB, gives leaders  information regarding who to contact within the Community when addressing certain issues, protocols regarding dealing with discipline issues and how to assess certain situations.

While each position has its own specific roles and responsibilities, there are several commonalities between what a Hall and Education Proctor does within the house:

1.)  Mentoring / Support Role

Both Hall and Educational Proctors provide frontline support and referrals, with Hall Proctors focusing on the needs of residents of their Halls and Educational Proctors focusing on the needs of all residents within the House; each provide support and make referrals as necessary.

2.)  Role on the House Team

Both Hall and Educational Proctors play central roles as members of the House Team by regularly attending meetings; supporting House Committee activities; assisting other Proctors, the House Don(s), and Coordinators as needed; and regularly communicating information to students.

3.)  Administrative Responsibilities

Both Hall and Educational Proctors are involved in check-in, check-out, and ongoing administration of residence life in their House, with Hall Proctors being the ongoing liaison with Residence Administration in terms of the residential life, facilities, and other needs of their Hall. Both Hall and Educational Proctors are expected to attend board and committee meetings.

4.)  Order/Discipline in the House

Both Hall and Educational Proctors assume responsibility for maintaining order within the immediate vicinity of  the residence and meal halls. This includes participation in weekend duty and nightly coverage schedules, shared coverage of House Functions, Last Class Bash, Pub Tours, and holidays / breaks, and remaining in residence until the day after all other residence students are required to check out of residence (both semesters). Hall and Ed Proctors have front line responsibility in crisis response.

5.)  Leadership Development

Both Hall and Educational Proctors are expected to participate fully in leadership development opportunities, programs, and training including, at a minimum, full attendance at Fall Training, January Jam, and Bridging Day, as well as Orientation Training.

6.)  Accountability

While ultimately responsible to the Director of Residential Life, both Hall and Educational Proctors function as part of a House Team led by a House Don(s), who acts in an advisory, mentoring, and supervisory role.
