Fostering academic wellness
The Educational Proctor is one of two Proctor roles in the UNB Residence Community (the other being a Hall Proctor). An Educational Proctor is a selected student leader who works cooperatively with other House Team Members to provide support and a positive, developmental living environment for students in residence. While both Hall and Educational Proctors share several common responsibilities and work collaboratively in several regards, each position also has unique and specific responsibilities and roles. In addition to their common responsibilities, Educational Proctors focus largely on providing academic/wellness support and implementing programs for the House.
Unique responsibilities of educational proctors
Academic/Wellness support and referrals
Educational Proctors provide academic/wellness support and referrals to students in their House, both by providing one on one support and by drawing upon other resources to provide in-house academic and wellness support sessions. Educational Proctors receive role specific training in this regard to assist with their goal of enhancing the academic experience and wellness of residents.
Specific duties related to Academic/Wellness support role are:
- Advising and counseling residents on study strategies, academic concerns and wellness issues
- Referring residents to appropriate academic and wellness resources, services and support programs (ie. Writing and Study Skills Centre, Math Help Centre, etc.).
- Responding directly and promptly to referrals from Hall Proctors gathered as a result of ongoing contact with residents and/or from the First Year Student survey and Quality of Life Survey.
The Educational Proctor's Manual - Provides information regarding organizing tutorials, how to deal with certain academic concerns your resident's may have and who to contact on campus to answer questions.
House programming
Educational Proctors implement programs for all residents in the House, both in response to emergent needs within the House and according to the Wellness Wheel, with a particular focus on Academic and Wellness Programming.
Specific guidelines for implementing House programming are as follows:
- Coordinating programs in their House that respond to the emergent and ongoing needs of residents.
- Facilitating the use of peer oriented study groups with the House.
- Organizing in-House tutorials.
