Easing the transition
Moving into residence can be a difficult process for first year students. Between trying to balance living on their own and school work, life for first year students can be stressful and full of doubt. Luckily, in our residences we have House Orientation Committees (aka HOCs) there to help make the transition easier and more comfortable for the first year students.
HOCs are a group of student leaders who are selected to lead each house during Orientation Week. These leaders are experienced residents who know first hand the many feelings that first years may be experiencing(from everything like stress from being away from home to not knowing their way around campus or Fredericton) as they were once there themselves! Their primary focus is provide incoming students with a positive introduction to university and residence life, and assist them during this period of transition. We work collaboratively with the various academic faculties, the Student Union Orientation executive, and with Student Affairs to ensure that Orientation Week gets first year students off on the right foot.
Hazing Policy
Hazing is defined as:
• "To harass by exacting unnecessary or disagreeable work"
• "To harass by banter, ridicule, or criticism"
• "To haze by way of initiation"
In essence, activities which constitute hazing typically involve an element of humiliation or degradation, or performing disagreeable or offensive tasks to gain the approval of those in power.
The UNB Residence Community does not tolerate hazing in any form (whether it occurs during Orientation, in conjunction with House Committee elections, or at any other time), and students found to be violating this policy will be subject to severe disciplinary action. When planning Orientation and House activities, residents and student leaders should consult with their Don and the Residence Coordinator if there is any doubt as to whether an activity would be considered hazing.
Students who plan, implement, or participate in such activities will be subject to disciplinary action which could be as severe as eviction from residence.
