Representing your house
Each September, UNB welcomes a great many new students to our campus. In order to ease their transition to university life and to provide new students with a warm welcome, an extensive Orientation program is developed and implemented by Academic Faculties, the Residence Community, and the UNB Student Union (under the direction of the EMC and Student Development Coordinator). House Orientation Committees (HOCs) are an important part of this process.
The HOC will be chaired by the Don /Co-Don and be composed of the following: the Dons-in-Training (where applicable), and additional returning house members (Maximum of 10 per house, except McLeod and Joy Kidd which may have a maximum of 15), one of whom normally will be the incoming House President.
Applying to be an HOC member
Think you'd like to be an HOC member for the upcoming 2012/2013 academic year? In the Spring, pick up an application from your Don or print out the one that will be available on this page and return it to your Don by the deadline that will be announced later in this year.
Contract
A copy of the contract that all HOCs must sign on Bridging Day can be found here. This contract outlines the responsibilities HOCs have regarding designing and implementing Orientation Week schedules, Hazing, and Alcohol Policies.
So now you're an HOC...
So you're a member of the HOC; the next step is to prepare yourself for Fall Training and Orientation. Every Fall, our HOCs come back to campus after a long summer away from residence and take part in our Fall Training program. Here, HOCs receive training in how to handle common situations, how to help first year students get acquainted with campus, and how recognize and avoid hazing activities.
Take a look through the guide found here, which will give some tips to best prepare for Orientation Week and help First Year Students as well as how to build a close and tight-knit community.
