Nurs 6011 Foundations of Graduate Study

Develops and consolidates advanced information literacy and writing skills required for posing questions, making and supporting claims, investigating the world, and communicating with others for the practice of evidence-based health care. This is a core course in all streams and a pre-requisite or co-requisite for all other MN courses.

Nurs 6012  Health Research Statistics

Provides students with a foundation for planning, conducting, reporting and critiquing the analysis of quantitative data. An understanding of statistical procedures is fostered through the discussion of underlying concepts and principles, rather than mathematical equations. Assumptions underlying various parametric and non-parametric statistical tests are discussed, as well as strategies for testing and dealing with any violations of these assumptions. This is a core course in all streams.

Nurs 6013 Theoretical Foundations of Nursing

Builds on foundational knowledge of nursing theories and critically reflects on the utility of theories in guiding advanced practice.  Explores the interplay between nursing theories and those from other disciplines and encourages development of a clear understanding of the philosophical, scientific and contextual underpinnings of the nursing profession. Students are prepared to articulate an advanced nursing perspective for engaging in leadership, clinical, consultative, and collaborative and research roles.  This is a core course in all streams.

Nurs 6016 Evidence Based Nursing

Builds on foundations of critical inquiry by emphasizing the evaluation and interpretation of qualitative and quantitative research.  Students develop an enhanced ability to use systematic reviews and research – based innovations in making evidence based decisions for client care, nursing knowledge and organizational or system improvement.

Nurs 6014 Programming in Health Care

Develops an enhanced understanding of the role of program development and evaluation.  Prepares advanced practice nurses to act as change agents in organizations and communities using principles of program planning.  Students will explore effective ways of shaping organizations to benefit the public and learn to navigate at the system level to influence health policy.

Nurs 6311 Learning Theory for Nurse Education

Introduces principles of learning theories and styles that influence learning in cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains and applies them in nursing contexts.

Nurs 6312 Curriculum Design for Nurse Educators

Examines philosophical, historical, practical, and contextual influences on curriculum design and development and how they relate to its implementation and evaluation.

Nurs 6313 Instructional Design in Nurse Education

Discusses instructional, assessment, and feedback strategies relevant to nursing education at various levels and in a variety of settings.

Nurs 6314 Practicum in Nursing Education I

This concentrated practicum in the student’s selected area of concentration (health care or academic setting) provides an opportunity for synthesis of the specialized knowledge, skill and judgment inherent in the Advanced Practice role of the Nurse Educator. Facilitated by a faculty advisor and an educator preceptor, the student develops experience in providing educational experiences for nurses working across the health care sector and/or pre-professional nurses in academic and clinical practice settings. In addition to the education practice hours of the practicum, the course includes a discussion group component that addresses the professional, philosophical, ethical and practical issues related to the role of the Nurse Educator. This practicum includes 100 hours of supervised experience.

Nurs 6315 Practicum in Nursing Education II

This second concentrated practicum in the student’s selected area of concentration (health care or academic setting) provides an opportunity for consolidation and continued synthesis of the specialized knowledge, skill and judgment inherent in the Advanced Practice role of the Nurse Educator. Facilitated by a faculty advisor and an educator preceptor, the student develops cumulative and enhanced ability in providing educational experiences for nurses working across the health care sector and/or pre-professional nurses in academic and clinical practice settings. In addition to the education practice hours of the practicum, the course includes a discussion group component that addresses the professional, philosophical, ethical and practical issues related to the role of the Nurse Educator. This practicum includes 150 hours of supervised experience.
