2012 Law Week

Every year, a student committee, working with the Faculty Speaker’s Committee, organises a week of law-related activities focused on a  particular legal theme.  This year’s Law Week is February 20-24th and the theme is Health Law.

All events are free, open to the public, and will take place in Ludlow Hall, UNBF.

Monday, February 20th
50th Anniversary of the Harrison Shield Moot Competition
7:30 pm, Mary Louise Lynch Room (Room 2)
The school’s most prestigious in-house moot.  Come hear third year students Rebekah Culberson, Jeremy de Jong, Paul DiClemente and Rachel Pio argue a case before the Supreme Court of Ludlow Hall.  Judges from the New Brunswick Court of Appeal will be hearing the case.

Tuesday, February 21st
Student Research Poster Session
11:30 am – 12:30 pm, Room 2A and Main Lobby
Come hear students from this year’s Health Law class present their research in a poster session over meeting hour. 

Thursday, February 23rd
Speaker’s Hour
11:30 am-12:30 pm, Room 2A
Dr. Linda Neilson, a socio-law academic from the Sociology Department of UNB (and a UNB Faculty of Law graduate), will speak on issues relating to family law and domestic violence including the rights of the defence to access the health records of the victim held by third parties. 

Ivan C. Rand Memorial Lecture
5:30 pm, Mary Louise Lynch Room (Room 2)
Professor Jocelyn Downie from the Schulich School of Law (Dalhousie) will present this year’s Ivan C. Rand Memorial Lecture.  Professor Downie’s lecture is titled "A Change is Gonna Come: End of Life Law and Policy in Canada”  and relates to end of life legal considerations.  Please see here for Professor Downie’s biography and more information about the Rand Lecture. 

The Lecture will be followed by a reception in the Student Lounge.

Friday, February 24th
Rand Panel
10:00 am – 12:00 pm, Room 2B
Hosted in conjunction with the Rand Lecture, we are holding a panel discussion on the topic of Health Law.  Panelists are:

  • David T. Hashey, Q. C., Partner at Cox & Palmer and long-time Health Law Practitioner
  • Heather Hobart, Government of NB and UNB Faculty of Law Sessional Instructor in Health Law
