International Humanitarian Law Conference

On January 29th, students at UNB Law hosted a day-long conference on international humanitarian law.  Patti Wheatley, a third year law student and conference organizer explained what she and her colleagues set out to accomplish by hosting the event:

"We wanted to create an opportunity to explore and increase understanding of international humanitarian and international criminal law.  The conference also offered a unique chance to learn about the difficulties of this area of law in practice, from those who work in the field.  We were pleased we were able to offer that to the students, academics and lawyers who attended."

Conference attendees were invited to participate in a number of differently formatted sessions.  Panel discussions offered audience members an opportunity to gain various perspectives on related issues; focused lectures and speeches helped illuminate some of the progress made in international humanitarian law in recent years, and some of the outstanding challenges ahead.  Participants were also given several opportunities to engage these topics through question & answer sessions and informal opportunities to speak one-on-one with conference experts.
