Grand Opening of Mary Louise Lynch Room
The faculty of law at the University of New Brunswick has named its newly renovated smart classroom in honour of Mary Louise Lynch, a graduate and life-long benefactor of the institution.
“Our law school is consistently ranked among the top five in the country,” said UNB president John McLaughlin. “And this new space will help us to even better prepare our students for careers in law by giving them access to the latest technology and to a simulated courtroom experience.”
The classroom accommodates more than 150 students and will be used as a lecture theatre and as a courtroom for mock trials.
A generous gift of $250,000 from the New Brunswick Law Foundation (NBLF) helped to renovate the space, with additional funding from the faculty of law, UNB Alumni and friends of Mary Louise Lynch.
"The New Brunswick Law Foundation has a long tradition of funding programs and initiatives that promote and enhance justice and legal education for all New Brunswickers," said Karen Lee Lamrock, a governor of the NBLF. "This new space will help to develop the skills and passions of upcoming generations of students which will benefit many residents of this province."
“This generous funding from our graduates extends support to our current generation of students,” said Philip Bryden, UNB’s Dean of Law. “This new classroom will help us as we continue to develop the excellence of our program and helps to hone the skills of our students as they prepare for their professional careers in law.”
Dr. Lynch had a busy and successful law practice in Saint John, where she served as New Brunswick legal counsel for Lord Beaverbrook. She later served on the National Parole Board.
She was also a member of UNB’s Board of Governors and named its first governor emeritus. She was the registrar of the law school and a generous supporter of the university’s scholarships, library and special projects.
