Knocking Out Landmines

Knocking Out Landmines Boxing Event PosterOn March 26th, 2008, the UNB Business Law Society’s inaugural Knocking Out Landmines for-charity boxing event raised $2,090.64 in support of the Lawyers Against Landmines initiative. All funds raised through the Lawyers Against Landmines initiative benefit the Canadian Landmine Foundation.

Proceeds from the event will be used to train a mine detection dog (MDD) named after Cpl. Paul Davis of Halifax, NS. Cpl. Davis was killed just outside of Kandahar when his light-armoured vehicle ran off the road after colliding with a taxi and flipping over. Prior to his deployment, Cpl. Davis was posted for training at CFB Gagetown, NB.

According to Scott Fairweather, President and CEO of the Canadian Landmine Foundation: “Mine detection dogs are trained through the Canadian International Demining Corps of Sydney, NS. We have never had a Canadian trained dog killed or injured in the field - yet they speed clearance by up to 10 times.”
