International Law Society Hosts Conference

On Friday, February 8th, 2008, the International Law Society held a conference under the theme “The Role of Contemporary Canada in International Law”.

The day started with a reception in the Student Lounge with information booths run by UNB Law students who have participated in international internships (Erin Riley, Toby Kruger, Angelique Wojcik, Patti Wheatley and Adam Vander Linde).

Following the reception, Dr. Michael Byers of UBC spoke about "Canada's Role in International Law - Leader or Follower?"

In the afternoon, Dr. Oonagh Fitzgerald spoke on "Globalized Business and the Rule of Law - how law, business, and societies are adjusting to globalization through international corporate governance and social responsibility."

The day wrapped up with a roundtable discussion with the speakers and Professor Don Fleming responding to questions formulated by the ILS.

Dr. Michael Byers, UBC, Department of Political Science, is the current holder of the Canadian Research Chair in International Law and Politics. Dr. Byers’ research focuses on the interaction of international law and politics, particularly with respect to human rights, international organizations, the use of military force, the Arctic, and Canada-United States Relations.

Dr. Oonagh Fitzgerald is the Canadian Forces Legal Advisor to the Department of National Defence. Dr. Fitzgerald is responsible for the promotion, support and coordination of the Department’s work in the field of international law.
