UNB Law Wins Atlantic Debating Championship

John Whelan and Chris SamuelOn February 2nd and 3rd 2008, the UNB Law Debating Team competed in the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate (CUSID) Atlantic Regional Championships at Acadia University. Representatives from Memorial University, Cape Breton University, St. Francis-Xavier University, and Dalhousie University also were competing for the title.

The UNB Law team of John Whelan (LL.B. candidate 2008) & Chris Samuel (LL.B. candidate 2010) won the championship, bringing back to the Cup to UNB for a third consecutive year. Both members also ranked highly in the public speaking competition, with John winning the top public speaker award and Chris finishing third.

Capturing the trophy has a special significance for each member of the team. This is John’s fourth Atlantic title – a tournament record, while Chris, a former Western Canadian winner, is the first debater to win two different CUSID regional championships.
