Sir Howard Douglas Scholar

Chris Ryan (2007) has been named a Sir Howard Douglas Scholar by the University. The Sir Howard Douglas Award is presented annually to outstanding undergraduate students in third year and above who have achieved academic excellence and qualified for Dean's List standing, along with active participation in extra or co-curricular activities. Recipients become members of the Sir Howard Douglas Society of Scholars which promotes, cultivates and encourages them to live up to the motto Non nobis solum “ Not for ourselves alone “ and provides them with a network of like-minded and motivated classmates. Candidates must be nominated by their faculties.

Chris has contributed tremendously to both the UNB community and the community at large. In August 2005, Chris founded the UNB Christian Legal Fellowship, which he is currently co-chairing. He has been the Don of Tibbits Hall since August, 2005 and before that he was the Associate Don of McLeod House. Over the course of his tenure at UNB (both undergrad and law school), Chris has been a youth counselor and mentor, worked in the Fredericton Community Kitchen and been a volunteer with the Victoria Health Clinic and an orphanage in the Ukraine and tutored Kosovo refugees. He has done all of this while maintaining Dean’s List standing.

Sir Howard Douglas served as Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick from 1823 to 1831. During his time in the province, as representative of the Crown, he encouraged development, sought support for native peoples, improved communications and promoted education. He was a founder and the first Chancellor of King’s College, Fredericton, predecessor to UNB, which received its Royal Charter in 1829.

Please join us in congratulating Chris.
