For lawyers

Projects with local non-profit organizations form the core of our student placement program; each project requires an insured supervising lawyer, and in many cases, these organizations do not have access to a lawyer through their staff or board of directors. Supervising lawyers are asked to commit five to ten hours over the year to a particular project. While the time commitment is minimal, you play a key role in the success of our placement program.

Involvement with PBSC allows practicing lawyers to leverage the time they have available to devote to pro bono work through the energy and enthusiasm of law students. At the same time it gives them the opportunity to encourage a pro bono ethic in the future generation of lawyers, and make a significant contribution to a local group in need.

Supervising lawyers are asked to:

  • Approve and comment on the student placement project plan
  • Provide guidance to students as they work on their projects
  • Review and approve drafts of student work before final drafts are submitted to organizations
  • Commit up to 5 hours each term to the project they are supervising

If you are a lawyer working on a pro bono project of your own, you may benefit from having one or more students placed with you. Not only can our students assist by researching and writing legal memos, but they can also assist with document preparation, or in legal or administrative proceedings. On top of receiving assistance, you will be providing these students with a practical look at the profession.

If you are a practicing lawyer interested in volunteering with PBSC as a project supervisor or if you are working on a pro bono case and would like the assistance of one or more law students, please contact the PBSC Student Coordinator.  Please see here for the PBSC's Lawyer Supervisor Agreement Form.
