Ilsa Greenblatt-Shore distinguished graduate award
Purpose
The purpose of this award is to recognize one of our alumni for achieving excellence and thus bringing honour to our Law School. The award is intended to be consistent with the objectives of Awards Night which are to recognize excellence in our Law School community and to celebrate its heritage.
Criteria
The criteria are drafted in such a way as to allow flexibility and balance in the choosing of recipients. The ideal individual is one who has, for many years, been very much involved in public service including service to the Law School and who has achieved recognition in their chosen field.
In terms of this last element, it is recognized that there are many different roles for lawyers in our society and that even in the practise of law there are large and small firms, individual practitioners, specialists and generalists. In short, the objective of this award is to recognize individuals who are well-rounded and symbolize what is meant by professionalism. The proposed criteria are as follows:
The award recipient must have graduated from the University of New Brunswick at least fifteen (15) years previous to the granting of the Alumni Award of Excellence and will be a "well-rounded" member of the profession with qualities which may include the following:
- a strong record of public and community service;
- a strong record of service to the profession;
- demonstrated excellence in the nominee's chosen area of law; and
- involvement in the Law School community.
Nominees shall exclude persons who are presently Members of Parliament and Members of a Legislative Assembly. The Award will be made at the discretion of the Committee taking into account these terms of reference.
Process
The Award of Excellence is to be awarded on an annual basis at Awards Night in October.
Nominations will be sought from the alumni through Nexus, the UNB Alumni News, and the Law Society News by the fall of the previous year at the latest. A decision will be made by the committee by the end of May in the year of granting.
The Heritage Committee will be encharged with choosing the successful recipient.
