BRSS with Minor

The field of recreation and sport is broad and diverse, with opportunities to make a difference in the lives of individuals and communities. The BRSS with Minor Concentration allows you to choose a minor that will both focus and complement your degree, giving you an advantage in the workplace or graduate school.

Align your studies with your career plans

Choosing a minor in addition to the BRSS major increases your chances of finding the career you want. For example, if you’re interested in

  • Community development, law enforcement, social work, gerontology, coaching, or recreation for special populations, you may choose to minor in sociology or psychology.
  • Outdoor education, outdoor recreation, or sustainable tourism, a minor in environmental studies would be a good choice.
  • Landscape architecture, a minor in biology would be an asset.
  • Journalism, sport reporting or travel writing, a minor in English would be good preparation.
  • A career in tourism, a minor in a language would be useful.
  • Employment in sport museums, living history site management, performing arts facilities, and special event co-ordination, choose a minor in fine arts or history.

Open doors to graduate school

Having a minor in another field creates options for further education or graduate school. While graduate programs are open to a variety of undergraduate backgrounds, your chances of being accepted are greater if you have a foundation in a specific area – planning, social work and environmental studies, for example. Community colleges and technical schools also encourage complementary minors.
