Challenge For Credit

Challenge for Credit is a mechanism whereby you can “challenge” a course to receive credit for it, rather than taking a course and receiving a grade.

Why challenge for credit?

In Kinesiology, some students challenge for 1 and 2 credit Activity Courses. For example, a Bronze Cross, NLS certified, or varsity swimmer could challenge for credit Kin 2603, Basic Swimming rather than take the course. The instructor would administer a comprehensive exam and/or require proof of certifications. If successful, the student receives a “CR” on his/her transcript.

What about challenging for a 3ch course?

If you have experience that you feel is equivalent to a 3ch course in the Faculty, then you can apply through the College of Extended Learning for a Prior Learning Assessment rather than challenge for credit.

Recommended procedures for Challenging for Credit

  1. Review the UNB regulations on Challenging for Credit
  2. Meet with the instructor of the course, review the course outline and discuss with him/her what will be required (comprehensive exam, tests, etc.) to challenge a course for credit.  Note: normally, a course must be listed in the timetable (with an instructor assigned) in order to challenge for credit.
  3. If you think you can succeed, then print and complete the application form.  Make sure the instructor attaches a note that he/she agrees to conduct a comprehensive exam.  Then take to the Director of Undergraduate Studies for Faculty approval.
  4. Take the approved form to Financial Services to pay fee.
  5. Take to the Registrar’s office for final processing.
