A leader in lifestyle, health and performance since 1957
The Faculty of Kinesiology has a long and distinguished history as leader in the field of recreation, sport and wellness. In 1957, UNB offered the first Bachelor of Physical Education degree in the Maritimes. By 1963, with over 200 students enrolled, the UNB Physical Education Undergraduate Program was the largest in Canada.
The Master of Education (Physical Education) degree program was launched in summer school in 1969. In 1975, the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation was created, expanding beyond teacher training to a discipline-based program in sport, recreation and allied health fields.
The Faculty has been at the forefront of the changing field of physical education, health, and recreation. UNB was the first university in the Maritimes to change its name from Physical Education and Recreation to Kinesiology. We were also among the first to have our Kinesiology program accredited by the CCUPEKA.
International leader in research
In 2005, the Faculty of Kinesiology and Faculty of Business Administration jointly introduced the MBA in Sport and Recreation Management. The first program of its kind in Eastern Canada, this degree fills a major gap in the education opportunities available for continuing and returning students with an interest in this field.
UNB has a long history of research in clinical motion analysis, and has developed one of the most advanced movement analysis laboratories in Canada. The Human Performance lab is housed in the in the Richard J. CURRIE CENTER, which was opened in 2011.
The Richard J. CURRIE CENTER, the only one of its kind in Canada, provides an enhanced learning environment, strengthens our research programs, expands our outreach programs, and attracts high caliber student, staff and faculty.
In keeping with its history, the Faculty continues to lead in the field of Kinesiology through excellence in teaching, collaborative research, and outreach programs focused on improving the quality of life in Canada and beyond.
