Protect our natural resources

If you love the outdoors and want to protect and manage our forests, then choose our four-year undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Forestry (BScF) degree.
Forests are important in so many ways—from providing recreational opportunities and wildlife habitats to slowing climate change and growing wood for products we use every day.
Forests have tremendous environmental, economic and social value for everyone. Balancing these values is one of the toughest challenges facing today’s environmental leaders. With a BScF degree you will have all the skills you need to meet that challenge.
Choose to be a leader
The BScF program emphasizes observations and experimentation in our nearby outdoor lab. Gain the knowledge and experience you need to join the next generation of educated and committed leaders who are working to ensure the viability of our forests for future generations. Learn how to regenerate forests, protect waterways, conserve wildlife habitat and protect forests from fire, disease, and insects. Develop a passion for life-long learning and a commitment to ethical forestry practices and stewardship.
"It is really great to have outdoor labs and get to learn about forestry hands-on in the UNB woodlot. The best part is that what you learn goes far beyond the classroom and allows you to get amazing summer jobs.
A forestry degree is a well-rounded degree that provides its graduates with a wide variety of skills and abilities to enter today's job market. The face of forestry is changing and the skills received in a forestry degree are transferable to so many employment opportunities. A forestry degree prepares its students for more than the traditional forestry jobs." – Valerie Archibald, BScF'99, Associate Director of the Canadian Forestry Association of New Brunswick
Build solid skills
In the BScF program you will develop the skills you need to communicate the effects of management strategies on the forest ecosystem and provide for the flow of goods and services from the forest while still protecting it.
Learn how to manage time and plan work effectively, make decisions and stand by them, and relate to a wide range of people. You’ll graduate with highly developed calculation and computing skills, a keen awareness of issues of health and safety, and excellent oral and written skills.
You will be prepared to become a Registered Professional Forester, the designation required in Canada to work as a professional forester. Registered Professional Foresters decide when, where and how the forest should be harvested and replanted in ways that sustain its resources and protect wildlife. Many career options await you.
Hands-on education
The first year of the BScF program begins with an introduction to the curriculum and our systems approach to learning during a fall field camp. You'll meet your classmates and professors in an informal setting. You will typically take five courses per term, starting with introductory courses in biology, math, chemistry, ecology, forestry, and communications.
Next you will learn how to design management strategies over large land areas and long periods of time that balance complex environmental, economic, and social needs. In the final-year practicum, you will develop a forest management plan for a landowner.
You will spend time learning outdoors in our university forests including the 1,500-hectare University Forest near the Fredericton campus. You will also get the chance to collaborate projects with the scientists and managers at the nearby Atlantic Forestry Research Centre and the headquarters of the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources.
