Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

If you want to earn an academic degree of the highest level and become an expert in your field, then choose our PhD program.

Alongside professors who are some of the world's best in their disciplines, you will embark on a major research study exploring a specific aspect of forestry or environmental management. You will be able to tailor your research to whatever you are passionate about, such as forest fire management policy, the effects of mercury on Bay of Fundy seagulls or the economic impact of forest management strategies on Crown Land.

You will develop a research proposal based on your interests, complete a thesis and an approved course program. The PhD program generally takes a minimum of three years. You have the option of studying full-time or part-time.

Requirements

You must hold a research based master's degree such as a Master of Science in Forestry or have an excellent, honours undergraduate degree. In some cases, candidates may be required to register initially for the MScF, after which transfer to the PhD program may be permitted after a satisfactory performance evaluation. All PhD candidates are required to successfully complete an oral and written qualifying examination at the beginning of their program.

How to apply

You can begin the application process by contacting a professor in your field of interest. They will determine whether your qualifications and research interests match the programs and possible graduate student vacancies currently in the faculty.

You may also contact potential faculty supervisors prior to submitting your preliminary assessment form to determine if any professors have the research space, funding and time to work with you. Having a professor select you to work on a research project may enhance your chances of acceptance into the School of Graduate Studies but does not guarantee it.

You are required to submit copies of transcripts and, in the case of international students, a TOEFL score. If a faculty supervisor is interested working with you, and if funding is in place, the faculty will ask you to submit an application for the School of Graduate Studies.

Students are not usually admitted without full funding.
