Our program

Urban forestry involves managing the urban forest to support an array of goods and services, including green streetscapes, rain water filtration, recreation, wildlife and carbon sequestration. The ultimate goal of this management is to achieve a sustainable supply of these goods and services over the long term that best meet our environmental, social and economic needs in the urban environment.

To meet this management goal, we require fundamental knowledge of forest and human systems, as well as an in-depth understanding of the sensitivity and dependency of one on the other. In addition, we require an ability to develop and implement strategies that meet our competing objectives.

Our program will help you understand forest and human systems (and their interactions) through courses in ecology, hydrology, climatology, soil chemistry, biodiversity, sociology, economics, policy and others. It will also equip you with forest management tools such as urban tree growth and management modeling, and others to help you design urban forest management plans to meet multiple objectives. These tools are supported with state-of-the-art GIS/GPS technologies, statistical analysis, and others to ensure you have the expertise to excel in your career in forest management.

You will integrate your knowledge with critical thinking and structured problem solving to help you design management plans that meet social, environmental and economic objectives. You will learn both indoors and outdoors in our classrooms and laboratories. You will also undertake projects involving research, planning, and implementation for real-world clients such as the cities of Fredericton and Saint John, Parks Canada, Nature Trust NB, and others. Furthermore, you will become eligible to acquire a Registered Professional Forester designation that will allow you to be recognized and employed by forestry companies across Canada.

Urban forestry students follow a course map that defines required core courses taken in each year.
