Intent
To define the University's Emergency Procedures to be used in event of Death or Anticipated Death.
Scope
All persons, Fredericton Campus.
Procedure
Death of a Student
The UNB Officer first aware of the death will inform Campus Security immediately. Security will contact the Director of Student Affairs (or, in the Director's absence, the Director of Counselling), and the Director of Development & Public Relations and Information.
The Director of Student Affairs will inform the President, the Director of Counselling, a member of Campus Ministry, and such other individuals (e.g. the Registrar, the student's department head or advisor) as the Director deems necessary.
The Director of Student Affairs, in consultation with the President, will determine the most appropriate person to make initial contact with the next of kin on behalf of the University.
A member of the Campus Ministry and the Director of Counselling, in cooperation, will contact campus friends of the deceased and, as appropriate, check with Health Services, the Director of Residential Life, the International Student Advisor and the Faculty/Department/Division in which the student is enrolled.
Any memorial service will be organized by the Campus Ministry, who will also supervise the tidying up of personal effects.
Death of a Member of Faculty or Staff
The UNB Officer first aware of the death will first inform Campus Security, who will contact the Associate Vice-President of Human Resources and the Director of Development and Public Relations.
The Associate Vice-President of Human Resources will inform the President, the employee's Department, the Vice-President (Finance and Administration) or Vice-President (Academic), as appropriate, the Director of Counselling and the Campus Ministry.
Campus Ministry and the Director of Counselling, in cooperation, will contact campus friends of the deceased and such other individuals or departments as they deem necessary. Campus Ministry will be responsible for any campus memorial service.
Anticipated Deaths
In the case of an anticipated death of a student, or a member of faculty or staff, the Director of Student Affairs or the Associate Vice-President of Human Resources, as appropriate, will confer with the President to determine the action to be taken by the University.
Public Relations
In any of the above eventualities, all enquiries from the media, or contact initiated by the University with the media, will be handled by the Office of Development and Public Relations.
