Technology Management & Entrepreneurship

Building the right skills for success

Do you have technology’s ‘Next Big Idea’ but don’t know how to turn it into a successful business? Are you a working professional who wants to earn more money and advance your career?  Want to give yourself a huge advantage over other technology graduates in this increasingly competitive marketplace?

Your road to success starts here.

In today’s rapidly changing world, you need much more than just technological knowledge and engineering skills to achieve your goals. Do you think Mark Zuckerberg could have turned his idea into the multi-billion dollar success of Facebook without the right business skills? Where would BlackBerry be without business savvy entrepreneurs like Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis?

Nowadays, having brilliant technological skills doesn’t guarantee you the career of your dreams. Neither does having a great idea. To find success in a world where companies are fighting to survive, you need a broader set of well-rounded skills.

The University of New Brunswick’s Dr. J. Herbert Smith Centre for Technology Management & Entrepreneurship will give you the practical skills you need to set you apart from the crowd. In our diploma program – the only one of its kind in Atlantic Canada - you will learn essential business management, entrepreneurship and communications skills geared specifically to the technology industry.

You’ll learn how to work as part of a team, develop a solid business plan and apply basic financial and business principles to communicate complicated technology in a ’real world’ setting. The skills you learn in our courses are more practical than theoretical. If you are a working engineer or applied scientist, you can put these skills to use immediately to propel your career. If you are a technology student, you will build job-ready skills to accelerate your career as soon as you graduate.

Get `real world` experience

You will get individualized attention in our small classes from our instructors and guest lecturers who are successful working professionals in technology fields. You’ll also have the opportunity to work with some of the most innovative business leaders and entrepreneurs in our region through our guest lectures and  our innovation/business pitch competitions.

A broad range of skills are essential for success in technology careers today. In the TME program, you will gain valuable technology project and quality management skills that will give you a significant competitive advantage in your workplace and throughout your career. You’ll learn everything from how to finance a project and market it, to how to control risks and meet your company’s goals.

Turn your idea into reality

Got a great idea? You’ll have the opportunity to apply what you have learned to your own business idea. In our Technological Creativity and Innovation course, you will generate your own venture idea, evaluate its feasibility, pitch its merits and create a business plan to defend in a contest.

In our innovative Experiential Learning in Technology Management and Entrepreneurship course, you will gain valuable experience and skills by working with a company or organization or mentor to develop, execute and present an approved project.

Several of our graduates who have nurtured their ideas in our program have gone on to launch their own highly successful businesses. Others have gone on to rewarding careers at some of the most highly respected companies in the world, including Shell, NB Power, Proctor & Gamble, Bell Canada and Phillips.
