PhD Requirements
The PhD is primarily a research degree and the major emphasis is on the thesis, which must make a contribution to knowledge in the candidate's field of study.
The requirements for entrance into the PhD program are a Master's degree degree from a recognized university, or the equivalent. Master's students performing at an excellent level, on application, may be permitted to transfer their registration to the PhD program without finishing their current program. The normal course load for the PhD degree is 4 courses (a minimum 12 credit hours following a Master's degree).
PhD candidates are required to take the following examinations:
- Qualifying examination consisting of written/and or oral questions in two areas of Mechanical Engineering;
- Oral examination on their research proposal and field of study.
These examinations should be taken within 12 and 24 months, respectively, of registration in the PhD program.
